Character: Samuel Page
Based on: Sir Peredur/Percivale
Age: Twenty
Occupation: Sustainable Ag. student

Bio: Samuel was born the second son of Elisabeth and Jeffrey Page, right after his mother remarried. His step-father Paul is a farmer and Sam has worked on the family’s one hundred acres since he was old enough to pull an ear of corn off the stalk. He has a beloved older brother Eric, who went to Seminary and became a priest despite a horrible accident with a ferry wheel that caused him to lose several fingers and develop some fairly severe scarring--this is noteworthy because when the accident occurred Sam tried to pull him out and got his leg broken by the wheel. He now walks with a slight limp.

About eighteen, having successfully raised and then butchered his first mess of hogs by himself, Sam decided to go into sustainable agriculture and picked a college in New York. He lives in Britannia, renting the upstairs room in a house there, and commutes.

He is extremely happy.

His family is very strongly religious, but not in the Jehovah’s Witness/Evangelical sense. They mind their own business and let other folks mind theirs as far as religious conviction goes (otherwise they’re a very social bunch of people and would probably die if they ever spent very long in the city: Sam always has to stop himself from waving to every person who drives by when he’s in Britannia). Sam is the same. He was raised Mennonite, but since it’s pretty hard to find a Mennonite church outside of certain comfortable pockets of country, he tends to go Presbyterian these days.

He started to experience integrated memories back when he was fifteen--in fact, after the ferry accident. At this point it doesn’t really perturb him any more; he likes who he is and who he was and he’s okay with flashbacks. Frankly we are willing to bet it would be hard to find someone more copacetic about the fact of his own reincarnation than Sam.

Personality: Samuel is pretty much the friendliest guy you will ever meet. He’s a little shy of the whole dating scene (kissing ew >_>) but not remotely afraid of platonic physical contact.

He’s pretty good at giving useful advice, and he will definitely make farming metaphors in the process. If you are smart, though, you will not let him start talking about heritage potatoes.

Sample Post: Except from the admissions essay of Samuel Page, Sustainable Agriculture Major/Religion Minor:

When I was born, my ma named me Samuel because she wanted Jesus to forgive her.

She’d just gone and got divorced from my da, and married Paul instead, and she felt like maybe she done something wrong by doin’ that, account of how quick it was. She figured she’d get started right away livin’ more godly, so I got named after the Prophet. Funny thing was I don’t figure Jesus woulda minded at all. My da was good at being a father, but he wasn’t much good at being a husband, far as I could tell. Paul suits her like cream suits milk. He suits me too. Weren’t for Ma marryin’ Paul, I figure it woulda been a while longer before I learned how good farmin’ suits me.

After me, see, there was Isaac, and then Ruth, and then Simon-Peter, who’s the baby. We all got put to work on Paul’s farm, but what I’m best at, turns out, is messin’ with the animals. Any team of horses I got put to wouldn’t fuss no matter what. Hens don’t mind me reachin’ around for eggs, and when I was ten I birthed a calf by myself without a bit of trouble. I ain’t saying all this to sound proud of myself, only explaining why I’m going in to farm animals. Something about me I guess just sets well with ‘em.

Paul said he figured it wouldn’t do no harm and might do a bit of good if I raised somethin’ of my own from scratch, so I went down to auction and bought a litter of Large Blacks with what I’d got saved up in my allowance. Lord, I guess I never owned anything so fine in my life. When they got grown I sold a couple at auction and butchered the rest, and put up so much sausage I thought we weren’t never going to eat it all before it was time to start all over again. Paul was proud of me ‘cause I’d raised ‘em up and I still butchered like you got ta, and what I thought was I’d like ta do this my whole life if I could. I love hogs.

Something that’s almost as good as hogs is cattle. Belted Galloways I’m lookin’ at, account of they could use a little helping along.
